Thinking of a career change? Here are some things to consider!

Posted on

With more than 134,000 Australian’s studying in their 40s at the time of the last Cencus, it seems that age is no barrier to changing careers.

Whether you are wanting to get out of a rut, or do something you’ve always dreamed of, there are some smaller steps you can take to get it done.

Here are some questions to ask yourself and some things to consider when thinking about a career change.

1: Ask yourself – What do you want?

Assess your goals and values. What makes you happy and what would you love to do, even if you don’t get paid.

2: Do you have what it takes?

There are many things to consider when thinking about a career change, such as, understanding what skills and experience is required.

3: Are your skills transferable to your new career or do you need to study?

Research can help you determine if any of your skills are transferable such as customer service experience, or computer skills. In some cases you may need to go back and study.

Did you know that 41% of all students in Australia are over 25.

These days, you don’t need to head back to the classroom to study. Studying online, in your own time is possible. By studying with Australis College you can gain a qualification through blended or online learning.

This provides you with the flexibility of learning with the practicality of face to face or live training over a webinar.

4: Is there room for growth in your new career?

Changing career paths can be exciting – but is there room for growth and will it be enough to support your lifestyle?

In some cases if you are forced to accept a lower salary, you will need to think about whether it will negatively impact your quality of living.

5: Be prepared to start from the bottom

Beginning a new career may mean you may have to start from square one again. This includes a possible drop in income levels. See where you can make cuts and see if you can live with the consequences such as lack of funds or status. If you are dedicated to the work and driven, you should be able to work your way up quite quickly once you have proven your skills and experience.
